What does a “Farang” do, when he falls in love and tries his first super tasty Thai dish? He grabs the Thai, brings him home and wants to help him to start cooking.
After nine years, it is clear which of this undertaking was easy and which of it was really hard to do. What for The Farang was a difficult part here, was from The Chef’s perspective very easy – the cooking.
In between is the shopping: It doesn’t matter where you stay in Europe, all big cities of Europe have a huge amount of shops for Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and what kind of food you want to crave. You just take the tube or take the car and get a trolley full of perfect, yummy things.
Then there was, either if you have decided this at home or start to talk in your car what you would like to cook, what the Farang thought was the easiest part – 10 minutes of talking what The Chef will cook and how it will be prepared.
But lo and behold! This talk developed within 6 minutes into a perfect challenge and you had to decide if you want to loose this simple discussion – or want to drive straight to the next airport, let the terrible shouting Thai out of the car, into the next flight in the direction of Thailand and left you with no idea what you should be cooking with all the foreign food in the trunk of your car.
After a couple of month these things went – normally – very slowly easier. Sure, if friends and family came home to – and mainly so – visit The Chef in the kitchen all went smoothly, like one of the silk table decorations he already had told The Farang to lay out for all their guests. But while I try to help for the preparations of the dishes, I might run with open eyes in one of the clearly sensible errors I never should have done so.
Nine years now, the things that we do are clearly divided: He will deal with all the tasks and duties in the kitchen and I will prepare the table, fetch the wine or beer and let him have a look on the table if the table suits him.
And now it’s also clear what we do here: The Chef prepares and cooks the – sometimes hot and sometimes mild – dishes and if he is ready, this will be for you and me: Our Time to Taste!
